History
The Dakar Rally 2026, set to run from January 5 to January 19, will be the fifth edition held in Saudi Arabia. The race kicks off in the ancient city of AlUla, traverses the vast and challenging landscapes of the Saudi Arabian desert, including the Empty Quarter, and concludes at the scenic shores of the Red Sea in Yanbu. Race director David Castera assures that competitors will face a daunting challenge, encountering extensive stretches of dunes and navigating technical terrains while tackling massive distances.
In a bid to introduce new challenges and add to the race's intrigue, a unique "48-hour stage" has been introduced. During this stage, competitors must adhere to a strict time limit, halting at 4 pm and resuming at 7 am the next day to complete the route. This twist introduces a new level of strategy and endurance. The race will span a total distance of approximately 5,000 kilometers, with a significant portion comprising entirely new sections to explore Saudi Arabia's diverse and picturesque terrains.
Moreover, participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of AlUla. The start camp, located near ancient Nabataean temples, offers a unique way to get into the adventure and discovery mode before embarking on the challenging journey. With an exciting mix of new stage formats, testing terrains, and historical exploration, the Dakar Rally 2026 promises to be an unforgettable and demanding race.
